The event organiser cannot coordinate the event effectively unless he knows how many people will be attending.  This is easy to determine when, for example, an event is compulsory for all employees. However, when invitations are sent out, the only way the event manager can know how many people will attend is by the response from the invitee to indicate whether he or she will be attending. Furthermore, when people do accept the invitation, the event manager must ensure that they do actually attend. All sorts of dynamics depend on numbers, so the more accurate the number of confirmed attendees beforehand, the better the organisation.
