Ethics and the "holier than thou" effect
ID:CVHOL
Video Overview
We tend to be resistant to the idea that we should be taught ethics, and are rather sceptical about whether ethics courses are even effective. We need to be careful not to succumb to errors of thinking like the 'holier than thou' effect, which is when we believe that we are more ethical than others. We need to accept that it’s possible to behave unethically in certain toxic situations and environments. Business ethics can help us identify factors that could lead to unethical behaviour. This could help us think more clearly about difficult ethical situations like the ‘right versus right' dilemmas, where it’s not clear what course of action to take as both options appear to be right.
