This tutorial looks at rational planning, also called formal planning. Every organisation needs to have a broad vision of what the organisation should be, what the the organisation’s mission is, specific goals that are operationalised and an idea of various strategic objectives that need to be reached by acting according to specific plans. Vision in strategic management is usually a broad, all inclusive and forward thinking group of intentions without a specific plan as to how to achieve them. It is important for management to implement rational or formal planning to make sure that those objectives are achieved.
