In an economic context, the term diversification means mixing a variety of investments within an investment portfolio to minimize the risk. It basically means that you should not put all of your eggs in one basket when deciding which assets to invest in. The reasoning behind this is that a portfolio of different kinds of investments will, on average, yield higher returns and have a lower risk than any individual investment found within the portfolio.
